Image caption

The pumping of groundwater, oil, and natural gas around the western Gulf of Mexico is causing the land to sink, adding to global sea level rise. In the central and eastern part of the Gulf, natural settling and compaction of sediment from the Mississippi and other rivers is causing the land to fall.
