Temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean in May 2016 compared to the 1981-2010 average. A narrow band of cooler-than-average waters emerged at the equator in the eastern half of the basin in May. The cooling off is part of the continued weakening of El Niño that NOAA scienitsts have been blogging about in recent weeks.
