A newly released report, “The State of Climate Knowledge 2021,” outlines New York City’s climate research priorities, and identifies knowledge gaps for future study. NOAA’s Consortium for Climate Risk in the Urban Northeast (CCRUN) coauthored the report.

Where is the chance for wildfires enhanced at this time of year? Shading on each map reflects how often fires with an area of 100 acres or larger were reported within 25 miles during a 24-year base period. The darker the shading, the higher the number of fires reported close in time to the displayed date.

Summary: Cities in the Southeast continue to attract new residents. These urban environments face increasing challenges from extreme weather and climate-related impacts, but their growth also brings new capacities for building resilience.
