Summary: The transportation sector is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. Although the sector faces increasing impacts from extreme weather, good planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance practices can reduce these risks. A carbon-free, resilient, equitable transportation system would produce many benefits—for human health, environmental justice, the natural environment, and economic development—but careful consideration is needed to limit potential adverse consequences during this period of transition.
