I have always thought El Nino was caused by warmer than usual temperatures off the coast of Ecuador and due East. After all, the term "El Nino" came from South American fisherman who fished those waters. How many other El Nino events have there been where the temperature anomaly extends from the South Pacific Islands to Central American while a slightly cool anomaly existed off the South American coast?
