Early studies of El Niño in La Habana, Cuba.

Very good written by McPhaden ... remembering a little late 80s were sitting at our desks at the Fisheries Research Centre in Havana Cuba, waiting for the publication of "El Niño" (SOI) to relate with the maximum cold input to the western region of Cuba, where the largest catch of lobster fishing in the Gulf of Batabanó occurs fronts. I remember that we knew would behave as ENSO and we wrote to Reynolds, Enfield, Philander, and in 1996, Glantz came to Cuba to do a workshop on extreme events in the Caribbean, and was able to meet and Enfield Glantz own've kept a nice friendship with him. Today much is known about this event, but is fading a bit the essence of the phenomenon. I ask the young scientific community in the world who studies the phenomenon of El Niño, do not forget the early work of Mc Phaden, Quinn, van Loon, Namias, Rasmusson, Zebiak, Cane, Caviedes, Arntz, Namias, Glantz, Wyrtki, not to mention Walker and Bliss, Henry Diaz, Ropelewsky, Trenberth. I was very triseza know death of Quinn, and asked his collaborator, to send me by mail (at that time was very rare correspondence with Cuba) All items of William Quinn. Today I keep it with pride.
