El Nino Effects on the Galapagos Islands
Permalink
The 2010 El Nino caused a lot of destruction and death to the the Galapagos Islands, The Humboldt Current is cutoff as the trade winds no longer blow at normal strength. Without nutrient rich waters, the food chain is interrupted. Large algal beds die, depriving marine iguanas, turtles and many fish of their staple diet. Since the endemic species are still recuperating from the 2010 El Nino. Are there concerns that the 2015 El Nino might wipe out already severely endangered species on the islands?
