Usually Australia is ground zero for a strong El Nino but it seems that warmer than usual Indian ocean is offsetting the impact of El Nino for Australia. This is quite confusing for most observers especially considering the headline aspect of the El Nino story. Could it be said that world oceans are warming across the planet and that lends to more varied conditions that we have seen in the past and that previous effects of El Nino can be much different. This is probably why despite El Nino conditions we have not seen the Monsoon fail in India this year and similarly seen much wetter conditions in Australia.
