Looking at your first figure I notice there is a "double peaked" El Nino shown - one that dips in May, your early spring (our autumn) and then rises again to above the threshold in the next September whereas most of the others tend to drop down towards and below the La Nina threshold. Which year was that? And is there an idea of why it followed this seemingly rare trajectory?
