Modoki El Niño vs Traditional El Niño

It appears likely that the 2018-2019 El Niño will almost certainly be a Central Pacific El Niño. CP El Niños have different effects than Traditional El Niños do. Central Pacific El Niños result in more hurricanes and strong tropical storms striking certain parts of the United States. The 1968-70 El Niño was certainly a Central Pacific El Niño; during that, Hurricane Camille struck Alabama and Mississippi, then went through the Southeast U.S. into central and western Virginia. The 1990-1995 El Niño was also Central Pacific; Hurricane Bob in 1991 brushed northeastern North Carolina, then moved northward into New England, causing $1.5 to $3 billion in damage. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew struck southeast Florida and south central Louisiana. That caused $32 billion in damage and was the costliest hurricane before Katrina. This year, before El Niño sets in, Tropical Storm Gordon struck the Gulf States. Also, Hurricane Florence is striking the Carolinas. And sooner or later, we will have more Central Pacific El Niño years in which hurricanes hit the United States.
