Looking at those past El Nino maps, it kind of looks all over the place. I have to wonder if there is actually a statistically significant effect of El Nino on winter in North America compared to the usual winter weather variability. The precip variability goes from -12 to +12 inches, which I imagine is rain, not snow, so that's a fairly large difference for 3 months. Does El Nino increase variability of precip and temp then?
