I have to add, when something becomes colder, a loss of energy has occurred. When polar ice melts, it would be absorbing energy as the temperature increases - the water molecules become more excited.

So polar ice wouldn't be releasing energy when it melts, it would be absorbing energy that was once elsewhere.
